Shockey recently expanded its geographical reach into Maryland in partnership with Garrett County Public Schools (GCPS) and BFM Architects (BFM) for the Broad Ford School Renovation and Addition.
Project scope included a complete renovation and additions to the existing Southern Garrett Middle School in Oakland. The converted, new school, located at 605 Harvey Winters Drive, now houses grades Pre-K through 6.
Teaming with BFM, the team used value engineering (VE) to optimize lifecycle cost and value, and Shockey provided a final maximum guaranteed price to GCPS. Phase 1 of construction encompassed renovation of the existing middle school building; Phase 2 followed with demolition of the existing Broad Ford Elementary School and construction of new parking lots and athletic fields for the space.
Shockey’s cost estimating, scheduling, and logistical efforts, coupled with partnering with the local subcontracting community, were key to the project’s success.
During construction, Senior Project Manager Amy Gorman guided Broad Ford Principal Wise and a select group of students and staff on a tour of the upcoming school. Taking ownership of the project, students received a sneak peak of the school’s colors and chose a favorite layout for Media Center furniture.
The school opened for the Fall 2026 school year.
