In Progress: Hartwood HS

Designed with sustainability in mind by Grimm + Parker, Hartwood High School in Stafford County features more than 290,000 SF of space to accommodate up to 2,150 students in grades nine to 12. Stafford County Public Schools and Shockey built the new high school between U.S. 17 and Truslow Road to ease overcrowding; this is the first high school to be built by SCPS since 2008.

Hartwood (formerly High School #6) allows SCPS to address exponential growth while creating modern learning environments with amenities that align with its students’ educational interests.

With a strong design focus on extracurricular activities, Shockey is building the school with a 1000-seat theater and amenities such as a football stadium, baseball and softball fields, soccer fields, and tennis courts. Unlike the other five county high schools, this school’s theater is large enough to host drama and musical competitions. Additional structures to support the school’s activities will include a fieldhouse, concession stands for baseball and softball, and two storage buildings.

The school is set to open for the Fall 2026 school year.
