When a growing school needed housing for its graduate student population, Shockey repurposed the historic Jno. S. Solenberger & Co. hardware building into first-class student housing for Shenandoah University.
Located in Old Town Winchester’s pedestrian mall, the new dorms in an old building reflect adaptive use at its best. The school now offers apartment-style housing for three dozen graduate students in the 16,000 SF building. Approximately 2,500 SF of ground-floor retail space was set aside for commercial use.
University officials say that the housing has added increased energy and vitality to Winchester’s downtown. Historic tax credits helped finance the project.
