Howard Shockey & Sons Inc. is serving as Construction Manager at the new River City Middle School, located in an urban environment at the site of the former Elkhardt Middle School in Richmond. Responsible for preconstruction and construction, Shockey provided site development and is overseeing all mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection services and interior build-out and finishes for the new $64.5 million, 1,500-student capacity school.
River City Middle School contains a media center, auxiliary gyms, kitchens in each wing, three science labs, and an abundance of light and color. Exterior walls are primarily brick with aluminum composite metal panel systems. To help shorten construction time on the 183,000 SF school, exterior windows and doors are prefinished curtain wall and storefront systems.
River City’s teaching spaces are equipped with marker boards and tack boards. Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney toured the school in July and again in September, calling it a “high-tech, 21st century school that speaks to future performance and excellence of our students.”
Although school may look a bit different this fall due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Shockey education team continues building great places to work and learn.
