LCPS: Tuscarora HS

A 132-acre livestock farmstead became home to a 280,000 SF award-winning high school.

Tuscarora High School was a culmination of years of work, beginning with challenges associated with land acquisition, public opinion, and a taxing site in terms of construction logistics. Complicated by a number of factors, the design phase included the added test of preserving one of Virginia’s last remaining native trout habitats.

The design team produced a responsible solution for the preservation of the valuable resource while also creating public awareness. Shockey was commended for its commitment to providing the highest standards of erosion and sediment control, and for support of field staff in this pursuit.

The construction phase proved equally challenging, beginning with the discovery of subsurface limestone karst formations, and further complicated by the arrival of three major winter snow storms that dropped approximately 72″ of snow within a period of six weeks. Among other honors, the Construction Owners Association of America (COAA) presented the project team with a Silver Leadership Award.
