More than 700 students began their first day at Waxpool Elementary School this August. The new 102,852 SF building serves students in kindergarten through grade 5.
Waxpool’s staff will focus on what is called “wall-to-wall, project-based learning”, which promotes deeper learning opportunities than a traditional school environment. PBL gives students a chance to apply their knowledge.
The 59th elementary school in Loudoun County, Waxpool is one of the first elementary schools in the county to include a heavy emphasis on computer science, coding, and computational thinking.
The building’s layout is based on the county’s prototypical two-story elementary school design. Shockey built classrooms, a media center, cafeteria, multipurpose room (indoor basketball court and other play areas), and two unlighted outdoor physical education fields.
The school, located near the intersection of Waxpool Road and Belmont Ridge Road, is designed for an anticipated program capacity of 928 students.
