In Progress: Herndon ES

When school systems needs to build safely on busy, occupied campuses with minimal disruption to students, faculty, and staff, the Shockey team has the experience and know-how to get it done. It’s one of things that we do best.

Originally constructed in 1961, Herndon Elementary School underwent a number of additions through the 1990s, but since then, enrollment has exceeded the building capacity, leading to the introduction of temporary trailers for the Fairfax County public school.

Enter Shockey. Our team is renovating the existing structure and building multiple additions while school is in session. Herndon Elementary School will be transformed with a two-story classroom addition and a two-story classroom expansion to the west near the main entry. The scope also includes a one-story administrative office addition, a two-story cafeteria/utility room addition to the south, and a one-story office-corridor addition at the courtyard classroom. Demolition of the existing building and complete electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and fire suppressions systems are also included.

Outdoors, the roof, bus loop, and parking will be revitalized. In addition, students will gain upgraded playgrounds, relocated play fields, a new outdoor classroom, and restored courtyards.

Shockey believes that physical environs can empower children, supercharge feelings of belonging, and help lead to positive outcomes. Work will be completed in phases in order to allow occupancy of the existing building during construction. All school renovations, additions, and construction, for an anticipated enrollment of 1,050 students, will be finished by September 2027.
