Shockey delivered the award-winning James R. Wilkins Jr. Athletics and Events Center at Shenandoah University (SU) to TCO status a month ahead of schedule. At 77,000 SF, it’s the largest building of its kind within a 70-mile radius.
The Wilkins Center can seat 1,600 for athletic events, 4,972 people for large occasions such as graduations, concerts and conventions, when only chairs are needed, and 1,750 for full sit-down affairs.
The facility meets NCAA requirements for indoor track, basketball and volleyball, and includes practice and competition space for SU’s 21 athletic teams, which play in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. With a satellite athletic training area, inclement weather practice space, a curtain system that allows multiple sports teams to practice simultaneously, and a location in a highly visible spot just off Interstate 81, the center is expected to enhance recruiting for SU’s Division III teams.
The Wilkins Center was named Best Sports/Entertainment Project by ENR MidAtlantic.
