OAKLAND, Md. — Garrett County Public Schools (GCPS) proudly celebrated the official ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Broad Ford School on Thursday, May 21, 2026, marking an exciting milestone for students, staff, families, and the greater community.
The ceremony brought together local and state officials, Maryland Board of Education members, community partners, staff, students, and residents to commemorate the opening of the newly renovated and expanded facility.
“I am very grateful for the opportunity to have all of our students learn and grow in this amazing space,” she said. “We are proud and excited to call this beautiful school our home,” said Principal Rachel Wise (pictured above).
Guests had the opportunity to hear remarks highlighting the importance of investing in modern learning environments that support student success, innovation, and community engagement. Following the ceremonial ribbon cutting, attendees were invited to tour the new school and experience the updated learning spaces firsthand.
The new Broad Ford School, designed by BFM Architects and built by Howard Shockey & Sons, Inc., features modern classrooms, enhanced technology, and flexible learning spaces that promote collaboration, engagement, and hands-on learning.
“This new school reflects the shared commitment of our entire community to provide the very best for our students,” said GCPS Superintendent Dr. Brenda McCartney.
“We are grateful for the support of the Board of County Commissioners of Garrett County and our representatives at the state level for making this project a reality,” said Garrett County Board President Tom Woods. “This new Broad Ford School stands as a testament to what can be accomplished when local and state partners come together with a shared commitment to our students and community.”
