Monument Drive Transit Center Receives Virginia “Top Project” Award

RICHMOND, Va. — Virginia Business magazine has named Monument Drive Parking & Commuter Transit Center as a 2026 Top Project in its inaugural Virginia Top Projects & Real Estate Deals awards program, recognizing outstanding building and construction projects across the commonwealth and highlighting excellence in design, execution and impact within Virginia’s built environment.

“Monument Drive Transit Center stands out for the quality and execution demonstrated throughout the project,” said Richard Foster, associate publisher and editor of Virginia Business. “It reflects the coordination, attention to detail and expertise required to successfully deliver a project of this scale.”

The 262,000-SF project provides 820 free parking spaces, a short-term pick-up/drop-off parking area, commuter lanes, 40 electrical vehicle (EV) charging stations, and a ground-level rideshare transfer station. Monument Drive was the first to achieve Parksmart Silver certification in Virginia, and features 75% NetZero energy consumption.

“Breaking ground with innovation of all kinds, this project not only showcases Fairfax County’s commitment to design excellence and sustainability — it creates a distinctive new gateway for the DC Beltway region and serves as a national case study for sustainable transit-oriented design,” said Jeff Boehm, President of Howard Shockey & Sons, Inc.

As part of the VDOT “Transform I-66 Outside the Beltway” initiative, the Monument Drive Parking Garage and Transit Center was built to redefine and enhance Fairfax County’s multimodal transportation and commuter services. The project team includes the owner, Fairfax County, along with the contractor, Howard Shockey & Sons, Inc., and architect HGA.

On July 28, all the winning projects will be recognized at a celebration at Independence Golf Course in Midlothian. The evening will include dinner and an awards presentation.

Winners will also be featured in the July issue of Virginia Business and online at www.VirginiaBusiness.com.
