Danville, Va. — The Danville Office of Economic Development & Tourism hosted a groundbreaking ceremony on October 23, 2025, to mark the beginning of construction for the Spring Street Parking Garage.
The facility will be located at the southeast corner of the intersection of Spring Street and Union Street, Danville.
Rivermont LLC, based in Durham, North Carolina, is the leading developer of the project. The new parking deck has been designed to enhance the visual appeal of the downtown streetscape.
The project will feature a six-tier, single-use public parking garage with 432 total parking spaces. 42 are located at ground level on the Spring Street lot, with an extra 15 nearby on North Union. Each level of the deck will have 77-to-78 spaces, with 65 spaces available on the roof. The total ground square footage is over 145,000.
Community leaders and partners joined to celebrate the occasion, including Alonzo Jones, Danville Mayor, Alyssa Turner, River District Association (RDA) Interim Director, and Michael Lemanski, Rivermont Chief Executive Officer. Each shared celebratory remarks on the anticipated economic impact and community benefits of this new development.
“The Spring Street Parking Garage isn’t just about parking; it’s about supporting the people and businesses that make our River District so special,” said Danville Mayor Alonzo Jones. “With more parking and easier access, we’re helping our local businesses thrive, welcoming new opportunities, and keeping the heart of our city strong and growing.”
“The River District Association is proud to support the development of the new downtown parking garage, a critical infrastructure project that will significantly enhance accessibility and convenience for residents, visitors, and businesses,” said RDA Interim Director, Alyssa Turner. “This investment represents a pivotal step in continuing to foster a thriving, welcoming, and economically robust downtown. By expanding parking capacity, we are laying the groundwork for increased foot traffic and stronger support for local merchants, as well as creating the conditions for a more vibrant and connected community.”
Neal Morris, IDA Chair, said, “Members of the IDA Board are excited to see the Spring Street Parking Garage moving to reality. Parking studies have shown the need for parking in the River District with the growth downtown over the past several years. This additional parking will help alleviate the parking shortage and also provide parking for the influx of people going to Dan River Falls and the new Riverfront Park that will open soon.”
Designed by Built Form Architects, based in Durham, North Carolina, and built by general contractor, Howard Shockey and Sons, of Richmond, Virginia, the project’s expected completion timeline is 14 months.
