MANASSAS, Va. — The Manassas City School Board approved the construction contract for the new Jennie Dean Elementary School, awarding the bid to Howard Shockey & Sons.
The school was designed by RRMM Architects. The contract award is the next step in the process of getting the new school built, Superintendent Kevin Newman said at the School Board’s meeting Tuesday.
The division received eight bids and ultimately awarded the contract to Howard Shockey & Sons for more than $46.6 million. That figure is significantly lower than what the division originally budgeted for the project, at roughly $62 million.
Not only is the project under budget, but it is also on time, according to the schedule set by the division.
Currently, “substantial completion” of the new building is scheduled for May 31, 2026, with final completion following 30 calendar days thereafter.
A Bit of History
Jennie Dean Elementary School is named after Jennie Dean, who was born into slavery in Sudley Springs, Virginia, in the late 1800s. Dean founded the Manassas Industrial School, a vocational school for African American children.
