The objective of this year’s LeadingAge Virginia conference in Roanoke on June 15-17 is to regain momentum and build excitement among Virginia’s nonprofit senior living industry after the challenging last few years.
Experts across the country point to the aging demographic of the Baby Boomer, and senior living operators in Virginia are stepping forward to meet this demand. Where does Shockey see this next wave of development activity occurring? Our team anticipates significant activity related to the modernization of older/obsolete assets, the repositioning/expansion of existing CCRCs, and new investment in the up-and-coming middle market.
Design Trends That Are Shaping The Future Of Senior Housing
Here are some design trends the Shockey team is seeing:
- A shift towards a more contemporary aesthetic
- Increased access to and use of gardens and outdoor spaces
- Ample natural light and enhanced connectivity to the natural environment (biophilic design)
- A more wellness-driven focus, from yoga studios to swimming pools
- Innovations in options (and amenities) for younger Boomers, from coffee shops to wine bars
- Increased density of smaller, well-designed independent-living units
Construction Best Practices and Lessons Learned
During this week’s LeadingAge conference, Shockey will be participating in a panel conversation about “Development During a Pandemic: Best Practices and Lessons Learned” on Friday, June 17 at 10:15 a.m. This conversation about the award-winning Glenmere Expansion at the Village of Rockville (Md.) will be co-presented by Rob Wagoner of Howard Shockey & Sons, Inc. and Frank Muraca of ARCH Consultants Ltd. Learn more about how this $55 million expansion project was delivered on time (and nearly $1 million under budget) despite industry-wide material supply chain disruptions associated with the pandemic.
