The I-Deck at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Health is a new, high-visibility parking structure that provides much-needed parking to support major growth initiatives of the medical campus.
Throughout the preconstruction and construction phases, the team maintained continuous and open communication between VCU Health, the City of Richmond, State and City Police, Campus Security, and VDOT. Safety plans were discussed daily with VCU’s Health Emergency Communications staff — and with respect to the existing heliport: All inbound flight traffic was coordinated and immediately prioritized.
This prominent five-story parking garage is located at the northern edge of campus and optimizes what had previously been underutilized space between Interstate 64 and Interstate 95. The new garage replaces an existing surface parking lot and offers 1,200 parking spaces with LED lighting and multiple security cameras on each level for VCU medical students and employees.
Additional scope included construction of a new heliport, demolition of the existing heliport, and planned traffic improvements to North 7th Street at the congested I-95/I-64 interchange. The parking garage is Shockey’s fourth design-build parking deck project and the largest one to date with The Eisen Group.
