ASHBURN, VIRGINIA — On August 23rd, more than 700 students began their first day at Waxpool Elementary School. The new 102,852 square-foot building serves students in kindergarten through grade 5.
It is the 59th elementary school in Loudoun County and will focus on what is called “wall-to-wall, project-based learning.”
PBL promotes deeper learning opportunities than a traditional school environment, giving students a chance to apply their knowledge.
In addition, Waxpool is one of the first elementary schools in the county to include a heavy emphasis on computer science, coding, and computational thinking.
Waxpool’s layout is based on Loudoun County’s prototypical two-story elementary school design.
It includes classrooms, a media center, cafeteria, multipurpose room (indoor basketball court and other play areas), and two unlighted outdoor physical education fields.
The school is designed to house an anticipated program capacity of 928 students.
Project team members include:
- Contractor: Howard Shockey & Sons, Inc., Winchester, VA
- Architect: Moseley Architects, Springfield, VA
- Civil Engineer: Bowman Consulting, Leesburg, VA
Waxpool Elementary School is located near the intersection of Waxpool Road and Belmont Ridge Road.
