Winchester-based general contractor Howard Shockey & Sons, Inc. recently started work on a multi-phased expansion for Shenandoah Valley Westminster-Canterbury (SVWC), one of the largest continuing care retirement communities in the northern Shenandoah Valley.
Shenandoah Valley Westminster-Canterbury CEO Jeannie Shiley says, “SVWC is very excited to be working with Shockey as we enhance and expand our community. SVWC partnered with Shockey in the 1980s to build this incredible community, and we are thrilled to be working with them on this current re-positioning of our campus.”
Phase One includes Health Care/Memory Support Wing renovations and the addition of 10 to 12 rooms. These changes will allow each Health Care court to have its own activity space, a satellite hair salon, a dining area and a country kitchen that is more intimate and residential in scale. Enhancing the resident’s connectivity to nature (via courtyards and balconies) is also a key factor of this phase.
Phase Two concentrates on expanding the current Vitality Center, which now houses an indoor pool. Additions include an art studio with a pottery kiln, a mind gym, a demonstration kitchen, a wellness library, an aerobic studio, a state-of-the-art fitness room and meeting spaces and lounges in which residents and guests may socialize.
In Phase Three, internal re-organization will enhance existing spaces and update administrative offices, add more meeting space, and enlarge the Physical Therapy area. In Phase Four, the exterior of the loading dock area will be reconfigured and improved. The four phases of construction, combined, will take approximately two and a half years to complete.
All construction work has been carefully planned to minimize disruption to the residents. The architect is Noelker and Hull Associates of Chambersburg, Pa.
“We’re grateful to have been chosen to work again for SVWC—this repeat business is a vital indicator that our clients are pleased with the work that we provide,” says Jeff Boehm, president of Howard Shockey & Sons.
