A summer internship with Shockey is a serious job – it’s an educational process that prepares students for a professional career in construction.
Each season, Shockey hires a talented crew of college and university students from regional schools like the University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, and West Virginia University. During an eight-week internship, students are exposed to a wide range of opportunities within the industry, estimating and virtual design + construction in the office, and on-site roles in the field.
Meet Nathan Poole, a rising senior in Virginia Tech’s Construction Engineering and Management program — part of the Myers-Lawson School of Construction in the College of Engineering — and one of our 2023 summer interns.
“As an intern with Shockey on the Ranson Elementary School project outside of Charles Town, West Virginia,” said Poole, “I gained invaluable hands-on learning experience by assisting with submittal review, processing RFIs, and managing procurement logs. I was able to go over construction drawings in even greater depth and then assist with quality control checks.”
But Nathan considered being able to connect with his “fantastic” Shockey project team the most important opportunity he gleaned from his stint, saying that “Construction is first and foremost a business of people.”
