Construction of Hartwood Elementary School Awarded to Shockey

Fredericksburg, Va. – Howard Shockey & Sons, Inc. is pleased to announce that it has been awarded the construction contract for the replacement of the Hartwood Elementary School in the Westlake neighborhood of Stafford County.

As Stafford county continues to grow in population, the replacement campus will add 393 much-needed additional seats (964 total seating capacity) to help alleviate overcrowding and also improve the learning environment for students and staff.

The existing Hartwood ES, built in 1963, is the smallest elementary school in the County and is long overdue for a replacement.

The new 107,500 SF school will serve grades kindergarten through fifth. Recreational spaces include dedicated youth athletic fields, a stadium layout, a running track, paved play zones, and specialized modular playgrounds. Site circulation incorporates specialized, extended cuing vehicle lanes, a large passenger parking lot, and an independent bus loop to eliminate school-hour traffic backups onto nearby public roads.

The building plan adapts the prototype layout recently adopted for Stafford County’s newest elementary schools. Designed by Samaha Associates, the project targets Green Globes sustainable design compliance. This mandates strict indoor air quality management, low-emitting building materials, and a construction waste management program targeting a 75% diversion rate from landfills.
