Halifax County Celebrates Opening of New High School | WSET

Students in Halifax County are stepping into a new era of education as a $129 million high school opens its doors, replacing a building that served the community for more than 50 years.

The state-of-the-art facility is designed to enhance student learning with modern features such as floor-to-ceiling windows, collaborative learning areas, a two-story gym, and outdoor lunch spaces.

Dr. Amy Huskins, Superintendent of Halifax County Public Schools, emphasized the significance of the new building. “So many windows, so many shared spaces between core academic areas and career technical spaces in proximity to each other. They’ll see a new auditorium, they’ll see career technical spaces we didn’t have before, like cosmetology, and just new opportunities,” she said.

The project, a vision since 2019, was made possible by a one percent sales tax referendum approved by Halifax County voters. Dr. Huskins described the new high school as a “cornerstone of opportunity not just for students here, but for the next generations,” highlighting its role as a centerpiece for the community.

Designed by Grimm + Parker Architects, the facility features a multi-story, V-wing classroom building, auditorium and performance spaces, 2,500-seat gymnasium and auxiliary gym, large CTE workspaces, and a cafeteria at the building’s core.

Classes are slated to begin on August 18, as the school community prepares for the new academic year in its modern facilities.
