STAUNTON, Va. — Construction on the City of Staunton’s new Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court is well underway with substantial completion expected by November 1.
Key progress includes completed underground utilities, brickwork, and nearly all windows installed. Roofing and exterior metal paneling are close to being finished. Interior systems, such as framing, HVAC, electrical and sprinklers, are on the way to completion as well.
The project is being constructed by Howard Shockey & Sons, Inc. Moseley Architects is the designer.
The new facility is being built at the former Chestnut Hills Shopping Center in a strategic move to help catalyze the redevelopment of Staunton’s west end.
“The biggest thing is that we are really looking forward to seeing what the courthouse can do for the west end” said Knight, “I think its really going to be a spark to bring back rejuvenation to this area,” said Josh Knight, Engagement and Communications Manager for the city of Staunton. Knight said the workers were contracted to finish only the courthouse, but the remaining property of the former shopping center is still ‘being developed’ and in the planning stages.
“We look forward to making sure we have something that’s developed for everything, so it’s not just a brand new courthouse, in an old parking lot,” Knight added. “Were going to make sure we can kind of try and make everything look nice, ultimately close to the same time.”
Knight said the new courthouse will offer secure, modern accommodations for court operations and better serve the community’s needs.
