BEAMING IT UP: Topping-Out Ceremony Celebrates Progress

HALIFAX COUNTY, Va. — In what’s known as a topping-out ceremony, a final beam — signed by members of the community — was put in place Tuesday, completing the outer skeleton of a new Halifax County High School.

Residents were invited to sign their names on that last piece of steel as a way of taking part in the new school set to open in August 2025.

Howard Shockey & Sons, the company in charge of the construction of the high school, shared the idea of offering up the opportunity to sign the last piece of steel in the construction of the new school.

“We are building dreams together and this is a long time coming,” she continued. “We want everybody to feel connected to it.”

Huskin added that Shockey has been “such a great partner” in the high school construction project and she is pleased with the progress that has been made on the project over the summer.

“It’s on time and under budget,” Huskin pointed out. Construction of the new high school started last summer. In mid-May, Vincent Maresca, high school construction project manager, told the school board that construction of the new school was halfway complete.

This school year will be the last year of operation for the old Halifax County High School which first opened its doors to students for the 1979-80 school year.
