Shockey Ranked Among “Top Contractors In Virginia”

WINCHESTER, Va. – Howard Shockey & Sons, Inc. is pleased to announce that the company has earned the distinction of being named one of the top general contractors in Virginia. The March issue of Virginia Business, The Big Book, is a statewide report that ranks the state’s largest public and private companies.  The annual issue is dedicated to exploring how Virginia’s economy has performed across several key sectors, including economic development, construction, and commercial real estate.

Shockey is ranked among the top 10 general contractors with $255 million in total revenues.

In the story, editor Kate Andrews notes that the construction industry in Virginia stayed relatively busy during the pandemic, as major infrastructure projects and the expanding tech sector helped to buoy it. The Commonwealth as a whole added 10,800 construction jobs in 2020 — the largest number in the country — according to an analysis by the Associated General Contractors of America released in late January.

“Shockey is honored to again be on this list, and we are especially proud of the value that we delivered to our clients last year – especially in the midst of the COVID crisis,” says Jeff Boehm, President. See the full list of General Contractors here.

Shockey continued to build throughout the pandemic for many of the company’s core growth markets including healthcare, education, senior living, and manufacturing sectors.

In an unusual pandemic year twist, a few building projects were delivered to clients months before they could open to the public, such as the new Lightridge High School in Loudoun County (photo at right).

Representative current projects include a new parking tower for VCU Health in Richmond, the new Warren Memorial Hospital complex in Front Royal, a senior living project for the NexCore Group in Mechanicsville, and the Shihadeh Innovation Center in Winchester.

Virginia Business, as part of its construction story, says that green building is increasingly taking hold in Virginia. This sustainability trend holds true for Shockey projects as well, especially in the public sector. Many school districts, for example, have adopted enhanced energy efficiency practices for all construction projects. Shockey projects include a mix of energy certification programs including the EPA’s ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager®, the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) from the U.S. Green Building Council, and the Collaborative for High-Performance Schools (CHPS).

Shockey’s projects also utilize the latest technology in building information modeling (BIM) and virtual design and construction (VDC) to help clients save time and money.

“As one of the largest contractors in Virginia, we’re able to deliver the latest technological advances to our clients,” says Boehm. “And, as one of the oldest contractors in Virginia, we’ve got some of the most experienced, time-tested professionals in the field. This combination drives Shockey to keep growing and outperforming, one project at a time.”

Shockey, a family-owned business, was also ranked among “Virginia’s Largest Private Companies” in the magazine.  Shockey was founded in 1896 and is celebrating its 125th year in 2021.
