Shockey Earns National Accolade For Construction Excellence

In April, Howard Shockey & Sons, Inc. was named one of the Best School Contractors in the United States by General Contractor magazine.

Creating meaningful buildings with lasting appeal is one of the smartest investments a community can make. “Our clients want buildings that function well, open on time, and look good for decades, and that’s what we strive to deliver every time,” says Jeff Boehm, President of Shockey.

About this new ranking, General Contractor magazine says, “the firms on this list are ranked highly on Engineering News-Record’s (ENR) list of The Top 400 Contractors. They are also featured in industry magazines such as Building Design + Construction and Business Times, as well as in other popular magazines such as Forbes and Architectural Record.”  Architectural Digest recently named a Shockey project the “Most Beautiful Public High School in Virginia.”

The Shockey team has built nearly five million square feet of space for educational clients in just the last 15 years.

Shockey offers a significant depth of K-12 school construction experience and builds with student-centered learning in mind. The hallmark of Shockey’s approach is partnering with educational clients and design teams to build value-driven, safe environments where student creativity, collaboration, connection, and engagement flourish.

A collaborative, transparent delivery process is what sets Shockey apart. “Schools are the lifeblood of any community – they represent its future. The successful completion of these important projects is key to our success on other projects – lifecare, healthcare, industrial – in these same communities. Our projects touch our clients across the spectrum of their lives, and we strive to be their partner throughout,” Boehm added.

While Shockey often builds schools within the traditional design/bid/build model (where the construction award goes to the lowest responsive bidder), Shockey also excels as a Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR), where the school builder is retained through a careful examination of best value. Finally, Shockey has delivered numerous schools via public-private partnership — wherein Shockey serves as a partner to the local school district, delivering high-quality educational facilities under a design-build model.

GC Magazine listed the Best Contractor winners by state, and Shockey is top-ranked for Virginia. Click here to see all the winners of this year’s “The Best Middle School and High School Contractors in the U.S.”

Shockey’s projects have been honored with more than 50 awards in the last 10 years, including other national awards.

“Shockey’s proven track record, on even the most complex and ambitious projects, is something we’re very proud of,” says Boehm.
