Construction Starts on New Middle School in Front Royal

FRONT ROYAL, VA (November 2, 2015) – Construction is now underway on the new Warren County Middle School, which is set to open in 2017.

The new middle school campus is located on a 31.91 acre-site at the intersection of Happy Creek Road and the planned Leach Run Parkway.

Members of the Board of Education, Board of Supervisors and Town Council came together in October for a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the occasion.

Current fourth-graders from Hilda J. Barbour, Leslie Fox Keyser, and Ressie Jeffries Elementary Schools also were present at the groundbreaking to help kick off the project. Those students are expected to be some of the first sixth graders who will attend the new school.

“The undertaking of a project of this magnitude requires teamwork and cooperation,” said Superintendent Greg Drescher as he welcomed the crowd.

Drescher thanked everyone involved in making the project come to fruition, including the Warren County School Board, the Warren County Board of Supervisors, the Front Royal Town Council, County Administrator Doug Stanley and Town Manager Steve Burke.

He also paid special thanks to the contractor Howard Shockey & Sons, Inc. of Winchester, and the design firm Ballou Justice Upton Architects of Richmond.

The new 154,800-square-feet building consists of an administration suite, guidance offices, a health clinic, a kitchen, general classrooms, resource classrooms, science classrooms, a library/media center, a gymnasium and locker rooms and other associated spaces. The facility also includes a cost-efficient “cafetorium” that can seat about 500 at a time, using folding chairs that are located next to the school’s dining area.

The school’s design is targeting a LEED® Silver certification.
