Georgetown University

Constructed on a breathtaking 55-acre site in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Georgetown University’s Calcagnini Contemplative Center inspires students of all faiths. In addition to religious retreats, Georgetown University offers ESCAPE, an overnight, nondenominational reflective experience for the university’s first-year and transfer students that is held at the center.

Shockey built a dining hall, community building, courtyards, a caretaker’s house, and a small chapel, along with 28 cabins that house up to 78 visitors. An existing historic farmhouse, circa 1885, was relocated to the property and was rehabilitated.

The project won numerous construction awards, including an Award of Excellence from NAIOP.
