Roanoke Cty. Criminal Justice Academy

Showing a collaborative regional spirit, the city and county of Roanoke worked together to build the Roanoke County Criminal Justice Academy.

Paid for largely with federal and state asset forfeiture funds, an 8,400 SF addition to the Roanoke Police Academy became the new home to Roanoke County Criminal Justice Academy. The county Sheriff’s office, county police department, and the Western Virginia Regional Jail now train their employees and recruits side by side with Roanoke City police.

Shockey built new administrative offices, locker rooms, classrooms, and an auxiliary parking lot for the county. The joint public safety project now provides quality training for both the city and county through shared common spaces such as a gymnasium, simulator room, training tank, and classroom space. In addition to law enforcement training, the new building is used for community educational and recreational purposes.

CR Architects partnered with Shockey on the police academy and the new criminal justice training academy. The design-build project was procured through Virginia’s Public-Private Education Facilities and Infrastructure Act (PPEA) and built on a fast-track schedule.
