Currently under construction, the new James R. Wilkins Jr. Athletics and Events Center at Shenandoah University (SU) will serve both the community and the university, and help bring the school into the top tier of indoor athletic facilities in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
Located in a highly visible location just off Interstate 81, the center is expected to enhance recruiting for SU’s NCAA Division III teams.
With a stage and seating capacity of 5,000, the finished center will include practice and competition space for SU’s 21 athletic teams. The complex meets NCAA requirements for indoor track, basketball and volleyball. It includes a 200-meter, six-lane track with eight sprint lanes and throwing, sand pit and pole vaulting areas; a wooden basketball and volleyball surface; home and away locker facilities; concession stand and satellite athletic training area.
The facility incorporates inclement weather practice space and a curtain system that will allow multiple sports teams to practice simultaneously. Included in the complex is a 63,000 SF multipurpose field house with retractable seating for 1,600.
