Shockey has delivered the new James R. Wilkins Jr. Athletics and Events Center at Shenandoah University (SU) to TCO status a month ahead of schedule. At 77,000 SF, it’s the largest building of its kind in a 70-mile radius, and its features will likely attract many people from both inside and outside the community.
The Wilkins Center can seat 1,600 for athletic events and 4,972 people for large occasions such as graduations, concerts and conventions, when only chairs are needed. It can seat 1,750 for full sit-down affairs.
The complex, which meets NCAA requirements for indoor track, basketball and volleyball, includes practice and competition space for SU’s 21 athletic teams. The facility incorporates a satellite athletic training area, inclement weather practice space, and a curtain system that allows multiple sports teams to practice simultaneously.
Located in a highly visible location just off Interstate 81, the center is expected to enhance recruiting for SU’s Division III teams. School officials believe the complex brings the school into the top tier of indoor athletic facilities in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
