Our History

In 1896, a master carpenter named Howard Shockey went into business repairing wagons. His reputation for quality construction and his “do-it-right-the-first-time” attitude soon placed him in demand for custom home building in and around the small town of Winchester, VA. Howard Shockey quickly became known for his integrity, industriousness, and craftsmanship.

In the 1940s, Howard’s two sons joined him in the business, doing things the Shockey way. By then, the company was building both custom residential and larger commercial structures in and around Winchester. In 1947, the growing company became known as Howard Shockey & Sons, Inc. The men established a ready-mixed concrete operation, Crider & Shockey, Inc., in the 1940s (which was sold in 2008) and a precast concrete manufacturing division in the 1950s which continues to operate today (under new ownership) as The Shockey Precast Group.

The Shockey Companies have set the standard for expertise and uncompromising quality in the construction industry, providing construction management, general contracting, design-build, and precast concrete products and services. The diversified construction organization also provides real estate development with build-to-suit capabilities through Shockey Properties, which was established in 1970. Today, Shockey Properties owns and manages four million square feet of prime commercial space in the mid-Atlantic region, working with a broad range of national and international companies.
